The "Word" made flesh is certainly Jesus, but it's also Moses, Abraham, Noah, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.

The "Word " has been made flesh over and over again, from before the dawn of history and will continue until the end of humanity.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This is not a direct reference to Jesus or any other Messenger.

In the beginning - refers to an eternal reality beyond time and place. The changeless, "I am" from which physical reality resulted.

For this "Word to manifest itself in our physical reality it requires a Messenger from God, such as Jesus, or Moses, or Krishna, etc. The "Word " is not Jesus, alone, He is one of the vessels who have delivered the "Word". The words He speaks from God are not His words.

and the "Word" was with, God - So the "Word" is with God, but it is expressed through Jesus, or Moses, etc.

and the "Word" was, God - the "Word" is the condition of all realities as influenced by the Will of God. The "Word" or Will of God is the reality of God, so the "Word" was God The Will (Word) and reality of God are one, so the "Word" is or was God.

As DBT9 mentioned, the Jews do not recognise Jesus as the "Word". They do however recognise Moses and all the Prophets of the OT as the "Word".
