    Sarcophagus - From what I understand, scientists now posit that the universe is now made up of a small amount of visible matter, the rest being dark matter and dark energy. So the idea of empty space may be erroneous.

    The Australian Nobel prize winner, Prof Schmidt and others now think the universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate. This is based on observations of far distant super novae.

    They say that in trillions of years all the stars will go out and everything will be still and cold. Maybe then there will be empty space.
