My impression is: that Scientology is rapidly growing, because it really IS helping people to solve mental problems. Hence it is making money! It can easily function as a branch of the modern psychotherapy imo, and pay taxes. Unfortunately, they had been under attack by the medical psychiatry for ages. I suspect that to be the reason for them to function as a religion, as they have no other choice. It is all because of their attitude towards the shock therapy and chemistry in solving mental problems imo.
