    I think he actually said:

    "Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough,"

    That "within our mandate" qualification has previously ruled them out from doing anything useful, as their mandate is only to fight inflation. But perhaps he said it in a suitably Churchillian voice so as to frighten the shorts away.
