I have wondered that myself too, as right from the beginning of the election campaign Kristina Keneally was always right there and Tanya Plibersek was nowhere to be seen.
What ever went on back then for her to be cast aside has yet to come out in my opinion, so who ever would have been leader the rift was already done, dusted and pushed aside.
