A pilot project in Queensland, Australia saw UGC banned earlier this year after the state argued the environmental risks outweighed the economic benefits.
The company behind the pilot scheme, Linc Energy - which has since entered voluntary administration - was also committed for trial accused of wilfully and unlawfully causing serious environmental harm.
Queensland's environment minister said the UGC pilot scheme was the largest pollution investigation and prosecution in the territory's history.
