Head, just a quick story for your Dad: There are many hospital research labs out there that do research into Childhood Cancers. Maybe he could eat involved with one of those charities, gives one a real feel of satisfaction, and may save one little life. Much better than buying a new car or researching another holiday. But as I said before, not my business what one does with their life or money, and, yes my husband did manual labor as well, like your Dad, taught him the value of a quid, and life. One extra message, be happy, with whatever you have and you have succeeded in life.
