    No a shorter doesn't get paid dividends because you aren't holding the stock, you are holding a position agreed with the original owner of the stock, you are borrowing the asset, not the income from it.

    The dividend gets paid to the original owner by the party holding the short position once the shorted stock is returned to them.

    An easy way to understand it is that a short position neither the shorter or the original owner hold the stock, it's been sold, and there is an agreement in place that the shares will be returned at a later date plus any dividends. how the shorter gets those shares to repay the original owner is up to them.
