On that subject I saw a Colonial First State presentation, the Saudis about 10-15 years ago irrigated this huge area in the desert using aquifers far underneath, in order to have food security....they actually produced fair surpluses but now the aquifers are drying up and they are moving to a net deficit in the coming years....they keep drilling for more water but the poor sods usually just find oil instead.

Food security will become a huge issue in the next couple of decades as population growth squeezes finite resources / arable land.
