Scrutiny for Shorten-linked HSU officials
SENIOR officials of the Health Services Union in Victoria with close political links to federal Labor leader Bill Shorten face possible criminal prosecution for offences that carry jail terms of 12 months, under recommendations of the royal commission into union governance and corruption.
Recommendations yesterday by royal commissioner Dyson Heydon relating to the HSU branch No 1 secretary Diana Asmar and six other officials create new havoc for a union still reeling from the recent convictions of corrupt former leaders Michael Williamson and Craig Thomson.
Mr Heydon found Ms Asmar and five other officials should be referred to the commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions for charges under the Commonwealth Criminal Code after recklessly making false statements about the completion of online “right-of-entry” tests that are legally required for union organisers to gain access to workplaces.
The commissioner also found Kimberley Kitching, the HSU No 1 branch’s general manager, should be referred to the DPP for charges under the criminal code for aiding and abetting the making of false statements.
