I have been thinking about Sean O'wyers comment about metalstorm technology being the only viable weapon in space,
I believe the reason for this is due to electronic firing, if you fired a normal gun in space the resultant reactions that went with that would push the spacecraft out of it's normal path, whereas with metalstorm you can have a barrel that fires in equal and opposite directions at "EXACTLY" the same time, this causes and equal and opposite reaction which cancel out any recoil effect on the spacecraft.
This precise electronic firing has to be the answer in space, anything other than electronic firing would be just too imprecise.
But this same recoil mitigation would have many other uses as well here on earth, robotics i.e UAV, UGV come to mind.
