I don't agree that you either have to vote to blow up the board or you have no right to criticise the company's decisions. I think there's some middle ground there, quite a bit of it in fact.
Other than the number of directors, what changes would you be advocating? What different direction should the company be taking? Board spills are not to be undertaken lightly and without a clear idea of what the new board will look like (and can you be sure they'll want to stay if you vote for a spill?).
You can be unhappy with a company without wanting to launch a coup.
