now compare those figures to life expectancy in the 1900's and 1940s and 1970s and today,

Cancer is a horrible disease but in the 1900's and the 1940's the biggest killer of humans was a disease called war and high blood pressure, people simply didn't live long enough to develop the cancers of today.
