" Chris, there is something distorting the Australian property market and there is a definite need to pursue this issue of foreign ownership. This Government is becoming increasingly censorial and that can only mean they are hiding something serious. My personal belief is that there are more loopholes for foreign purchasers in Australian property (especially residential property) than a macrame scarf and this Government knows it, potentially encouraging it. The banking sector is seriously exposed to significant falls (readjustments) in property prices and as our Governments increasingly gets involved in distorting market forces, there is much to know why they are involved in this dangerous activity. I suspect the doors to foreign ownership by non residents is in reality wide open, Government motivation being to stabilise prices and forestall readjustment of prices. The opportunities for foreign ownership comes at the cost to Australian citizens but as usual short term expediency wins out over long term stability with current day Australian politics.
