I reckon NUF's purchase of compnies producing genetically modified crops is exactly the sort of high-tec capability China wants to buy. This is a strategic aquasition by NUF that adds considerable value. Mkt yet to factor this in. TO still likely IMO amd NUF still a BUY at current prices. DYOR.

Nufarm will expand its North American presence with the purchase of two US sorghum seed companies for an undisclosed amount, and also announced it has fulfilled its regulatory obligations arising from the March 2008 purchase of AH Marks. Texas-based Richardson Seeds produces and markets sorghum seed hybrids while MMR Genetics, formerly 47% owned by Richardson Seeds, researches and develops elite sorghum germplasm, Nufarm said in a statement. Combined sales of the two companies in 2008 was about US$22m. "The acquisitions represent high quality assets that will considerably strengthen Nufarm's existing seeds platform," Nufarm Managing Director Doug Rathbone said in a statement. Sorghum is an increasingly important crop that is seeing expanded use as an animal feed, for human consumption and as a feedstock for production of biofuels, he said. Globally, it is grown on about 40m hectares, mostly in semiarid regions of North and South America, Asia, Africa, India and Australia. Nufarm's General Manager of Seeds Brent Zacharias said Nufarm's ownership of the two US sorghum companies will provide substantial scale-up capability in both developing markets and breeding efforts. Regarding AH Marks, Nufarm is no longer required to abide by interim undertakings agreed with the UK Competition Commission and will proceed with the full integration of the business. "There are considerable benefits to be realised from the integration and the company will work hard to capture those benefits as quickly as possible," Rathbone said.
