SHALE gas is a potential game changer for the Territory, Chief Minister Adam Giles says.

At a major oil, gas and mining conference yesterday, he encouraged exploration companies to hurry up and develop the Territory's onshore energy reserves.

More than 1000 delegates and exhibitors from the energy and mining industries descended on Darwin's Convention Centre for the South East Asia Australia Offshore Conference and the Mining the Territory Conference as part of NT Resources Week.

Mr Giles told attendees the Territory had potential reserves of 240 trillion cubic feet of unconventional gas spread over three basins, and welcomed exploration taking place by companies such as Falcon, Pangaea, Armour, Magellan, Central Petroleum and Statoil. A bipartisan parliamentary committee has been established to look at the opportunities and pitfalls of onshore gas, he said.
