Self Awareness is in my opinion far less significant then Logic and Conscience because they are the Tools of Sentience. Possessing these tools in a limited sense does not create Sentience without many other factors: For instance look at the evolution of teeth.

So yes Intelligence and Emotion is distributed in complex life forms but by what degree and what proportion?
Elephants return to the graves of their loved ones and parents but do they paint cave walls or create music? As amazing as their trunk is their Sentience is limited by their Form and function from ever developing Human levels of Conscience and Logic. Our Brains have developed whole areas for these Tools and the ability to use them both concretely and abstractly.
