We did our SMSF around the same time - Initial discussions in Oct 07 and up and running in Jan 08.
We were with one of the big sharks who charged large fees and when I moved into the conservative option back in May07 and then cash in Aug 07, I looked at the fees and decided that the bank fixed term no brainer was 2% better, so we moved tho the SMSF. We currently have around 60% in Aus shares and the rest in cash - we don't have 20 years to go LOL.
A reasonable amount of work to set up, but well worth the trouble, and as you stated, just stick to the rules and it will remain a complying fund.
