If you look at the large volumes that occurs around announcements (sum up several days worth - there aren't that many freely available shares) it's clear a lot of trades are between short term traders not long term holders. Without news not many new long term holders looking at it so any selling be it by traders who are cutting losses or long termers cashing in, it is going to lead to a slow decline.
