Personally I wouldn't pay for a 17 hour flight if I could avoid it.
Not sure about the specifications for the 787 and its optimal flying routes as far as fuel efficiency is concerned as I haven't look into it yet. However I know that QANTAS management have a tendency to allocate aircraft to flying routes that they aren't suited to; example being the A330s flying short range domestic routes, which led to the clocking up of massive flying cycles within a short duration of operational time in service.
