Welcome to the world of algorithmic short selling.
They fill out the asks as the price is being walked down to keep the pressure on the stock. At the time they place the additionally bids they aren't far off the pace, so technically what Commsec is saying is correct.
It's just dodgy as because the algorithm can compute the required size of the positions behind the asks to ensure continued downward momentum. SO even if the buying volume picked up the shorter would just increase their borrowings and up their numbers.
