    Hi Brodie,
    "so for example, consider no salary had been earned.I'm selling $150k shares, $130k is capital gain. 50% off. only paying tax on $65k which is $18,200 + $3572 + 32.5% over 37,000 ($28,000 x 32.5% = 9,100)"

    So, providing your $150k of shares have been kept for more than 1 year, 50% discount = $65k
    If no other income, tax is $12,672 , excluding any rebates or medicare .
    Net $137,328

    Other things you might look at are superannuation contributions[would convert some of your 32.5c in the dollar to 15c contribution tax], and making sure there aren't any capital losses lurking around.
