@Barneydebear I'm in Napier, retired, and have done many periods of 6 months in S E Asia spread over the last 15 yrs.. Total of 18 months in China, nearly 2 years in Thailand, about 1 year in Bali and surround's, and another couple years between Malaysia / Cambodia / Borneo /Singapore etc etc..All my travel time was during our NZ winters which is the tourist low season in most of these places.....But tourist numbers are forever increasing and so are prices. I could once travel on $10 a day, all inclusive...Some tourists are very good to swap travel info with especially when your traveling in opposite directions, but most tourists are a waste of space. I very much enjoyed all my travels but the 2 hi points each trip was flying out of Auckland and flying back in again.
