I was talking to a Cisco Engineer at a Cisco Live event and he mentioned they had become an acquisitions company. It seems its difficult for them to be innovative due to internal policies and procedures (red tape)so instead they buy smaller up and coming companies. He even told me about a time when they had to setup a small company to develop some new tech and moved some staff over temporarily until they had developed the product enough.
They are also big on security as they are a big target for hackers and IP theft.
I recall this one some years ago and Cisco were able to prove it was their IOS because the other guys copied the known IOS bugs as well : )
