FEDERAL Court action over a proposed mine in Tasmania’s Tarkine region has started in Hobart.
The Tarkine National Coalition is challenging federal approval of Venture Minerals’ Riley Creek mine in the state’s North-West.
The court heard that among the grounds for the challenge was the contention that former federal environment minister Mark Butler did not adequately take into account the mine’s effect on threatened species such as the Tasmanian devil.
The company and the state and federal governments are also parties to the case.
An earlier hearing heard delays caused by the legal action were costing Venture Minerals $50,000 a week.
The hearing, before Federal Court Justice Richard Tracey, is expected to last for several days.
