"The Federal Reserve's monthly 'Beige Book' report said there was evidence the US economy is growing, albeit slowly. The report said inflation continues to remain subdued, but added that there were "modest signs of growth" in the economy in several areas.
The transport sector was boosted by strong earnings reports from major airlines.
Delta Air Lines soared 11pc after posting a third quarter profit and reporting strong forward bookings for the coming holiday season.
American Airlines parent company, AMR Corp, was up 9.4pc after it reported its first profit in two years, and US Airways Group gained 7pc on its strong earnings report.
Going along for the ride were JetBlue Airways, which rose 8.2pc and United Continental, which gained 6.5pc."
