Fine, take out 1998 and it still looks like temp rise has stalled since 2002! Current stall is 2-3 times as long as that between '40-'46, which was followed by a very abrupt drop of ~0.4C circa '47 with an additional ~0.1C decline over the next 5 years (HadCRUT3). If you were a 'chartist' you would be betting another sudden drop was imminent, but that ain't scientific.
WHEN the current pause ends then it will be because temp either resumes increasing or begins decreasing. The CO2 brigade say increase while the overlooked (and much maligned by the IPCC) solar physicists say decrease. Surely, this is a classic scientific 'shootout at the OK Corral' (or should that be CO2 Gulch). Whichever the case we are probably looking at 5-10 years, or more, before the gunsmoke clears and the victors emerge.
