High quality iron ore is worth its weight in gold because not only is the Fe content is high but impurities are low, leading to much lower losses in the steel making process. High quality iron ore is only available in Aus and Brazil.
In the minerals business over the past 20 to 30years, Cu, Fe ore and coking coal have been the commodities to be in, because they were large in value and you had to have large low-cost deposits. Note that BHP and RIO, to my knowledge, have no Zinc mining.
Zinc has always been a lousy business in the past, but now with the enormous demand from developing countries, it is now assuming the importance of the commodities listed above.When the BHP's and the RIO's realise that there is big money to be made from Zinc, that is when this commodity will take off.
