John Setka addresses rally at $1.5b hospital projectByNick McKenzie The AgeSeptember 4, 2024 — 10.27am
In a blatant challenge to the Albanese and Allan governments, former union boss John Setka has addressed a rally of construction union members at a large Victorian government construction site.
He appeared at an early morning meeting at the $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital project on Wednesday and addressed a few hundred union members and workers.
Former construction union boss John Setka addresses a worker rally in Melbourne.
Setka’s decision to attend the meeting is a challenge to the federal government’s move to place the CFMEU in administration.
It also undermines Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan’s claims that her government has zero tolerance for the CFMEU’s previous leadership.
Setka
quit the union in July amid revelations that corruption and criminality had infected the CFMEU. He did not attend last week’s large public demonstration in Melbourne.
The hospital project is tightly controlled by the union, with evidence uncovered by this masthead also suggesting unnamed CFMEU officials would
accept kickbacks to get subcontractors on the project.
