Lord Rothschild thinks it was his family and the British that created Israel. He described it as an "incredible piece of opportunism".
It's easy enough to understand the Rothschilds' incentive however, for Britain to concern itself with a matter unrelated to the country or even Europe (and so disrupt the lives of an independent people who poised no threat whatsoever to Britain), it seems very hard, for some at least, to discern why they would get involved. Once you join the dots, Rothschild's description of "opportunism" seems like the perfect word choice.
