It is very complicated and it's good that you acknowledge that rather than just going with the simplistic beliefs that get presented as fact. I too am no expert, because religious experts don't exist. Religion is best explored and expressed by groups of humans, rather than being dictated from the top down. That's why in this age we have no need for preachers, popes, ministers, bishops, TV evangelists, priests, etc.
Science and religion are just extensions of the same truth. Beyond the limits of science we try to find meaning in the abstract realms of religion. But religion alone can never be used to answer scientific questions.
