Maybe....just maybe at some time down the track, the major grids will be a thing of the past. There will be micro grids serving a much smaller area and power will be stored in household batteries fed from solar panels and the excess will be stored in "communal" batteries for use when the sun isn't powering the panels. That will rid us of coal-fired power stations and a vast amount of the ugly, expensive infrastructure currently in place.
A little bit too fanciful? Well it's starting to happen right now. What it does require is a lot more action from our civic leaders and a real concerted effort by the big end of town.
