BART Rolls Out Smart Card System
(KCBS) SAN FRANCISCO BART is getting ready to roll out a smart card program to ease the passage of commuters through toll gates.
Starting this week, the transit agency will start handing out the cards to select passengers.
BART spokesman Linton Johnson describes the program as Fastrak on rail. "They tie your credit card into the Smart card and they essentially pass it over a circular glass " reader at the toll gates and the fare gates open and "you catch your train," he explained.
Parking and reward incentives may be linked to the card system once it is up and running.
"I think it's great because then we won't have to keep going to the machine" to get tickets and change said one frequent BART rider.
The plan is to eventually link the BART card system with Translink for all Bay Area transit systems.
