BANDITS have reportedly taken staff and customers hostage at a Sydney bank this morning.

It is unclear whether the robbers are still inside the St George Bank, on Military Road in Neutral Bay.

A heavily armoured police vehicle with several armed police inside has positioned itself outside the bank's doors.

Details are still sketchy and police could not confirm reports a number of tellers were being held hostage.

It appears there was an armed hold-up when two robbers entered the bank shortly after 10am.

There have been numerous unconfirmed reports that local residents heard drilling overnight at the bank, thought it is not known whether it is connected to the raid.

It is understood at least two tellers managed to escape.

The police helicopter was flying overhead while officers armed with shields surrounded the bank.

Other specialist police also were being brought in, police said.

Military Road, a key access route along the north shore, was blocked off between Ben Boyd and Wycombe roads, backing up traffic for kilometres.

A bank customer said he stumbled across the robbery in progress and tried to help a bank worker who was grabbed by a masked gunman.

The bank customer, identified on radio only as Fred, said he was waiting outside the bank with about half a dozen other people around 9.30 (AEST) when a staff member arrived and was surprised the bank was not open.

"The place was dark inside and one of the other employees that was evidently running late came along and said she'd open up the door and let us in there," Fred said.

"And next thing we saw her running out and a guy who had a mask and everything on grabbed a hold of her and was trying to drag her back in.

"And a gentleman in front of me, he raced in and grabbed the guy and I went in and helped him and the next thing the guy came back and said 'I've got a gun, get out of here'.

"And I'm no hero, we did."

Fred said he saw two gunmen inside the bank.
