"Live" hole are those that the rig is still drilling. They conduct a dhem survey in the moment, (hit something compelling, stop drilling) and need further immediate direction and insight.
Live holes takes priority over completed holes, you can do them anytime.

"seeing good production rates" = getting a lot of work done, completing a lot of DHEM targets, no drama or hicups imo.
