I am not cross promoting here but AJ Lucus / Cuadrilla have done the most 'actual' work in Bowland shales & some results & info below may change your mind ?
No not to the stage of commercially viable but AJL/Cuadrilla have some sexy looking cores from recent 'actual' drilling, with free gas bubbling out of them - kind of hard to believe that this won't be commercial !!

IMO the largest threat to the commercial flowing of gas/oil from shale in the UK is not the shale formations but the green/conservation movement a battle that is fast approaching.
