People who toss and turn at night with lurid visions of Burkina Faso authorities marching into the camp firing AK-47's in the air declaring, "The mine is ours now!" fail to see the other side of the story. This isn't some mine where dudes are chipping nuggets off ore veins with a pick-axe.
It takes hundreds of skilled and qualified engineers, planners, operators and managers to turn what looks like ordinary dirt into fat dorés of gold. If there was ever any threat to the safety of the personnel, they'd be on the next flight home and the river of cash into BF coffers would cease.
And, not to be so cynical, I don't think BF is ever contemplating the idea anyway. The CEO, Richard, has bent over backwards to foster goodwill and friendship with the local community (unlike some Chinese mines in Africa...) and strike very generous terms with the government to have them share in the output.
