Lowes / Woollies were strategically outflanked by Bunnings and slaughtered on the battlefield. Land acquisition was a critical element in that battle. A hardware store requires several paddocks worth of space, and Bunnings had acquired every prime patch of land near their catchments, so Woolies was scratching to find good locations.
It's hard to imagine that there's going to be a similar impediment to new SportsDirect stores. Retail spaces are much harder to stitch up like that.
