"Chinese 2014 output of natural flake graphite expected to decline further

With the decline in China’s steel consumption, demand for graphite has been restricted over H1 2014. A recent China Mining Association (CMA) report showed that the country’s output of natural flake graphite dropped 15% year on year to 180,000 tons in the first half of this year. This marks Chinese 2014 output of natural flake graphite expect to decline further due to a slower economic growth, especially as the refractories market is still accounting for nearly 40% of China’s overall domestic consumption.

China produced 540,000 tons of natural flake graphite with an annual production capacity of 1,200,000 tons in 2013, an obvious decline of output as compared to 700,000 tons in 2011, according to the latest statistics released by the Graphite Industry and Professional Committee of China Non-Metallic Minerals Industry Association (CNMIA).

China is currently the world’s largest exporter of graphite. In August alone, China exported 10032.81 tons of natural flake graphite, down 32.21% from the same month in 2013. The exports price on average was at US$913.45 per ton, up 8.22% year on year. In the first eight months, China exported 84174.16 tons of natural flake graphite with a value of US$73.0307 million, the exports volume increased 4.69% from a year earlier, the average export price down 1.82% to US$ 867.61 per ton, according to the data from China Custom.

From January to August, Japanese imports of natural flake graphite from China rose 53.77% to 14958.96 tons, valued at US$14.7405 million, accounting for 17.77% of China’s total export, the U.S imports of natural flake graphite from China dropped 14.7% to 12497.89 tons, valued at US$12.4229 million, accounting for 14.85% of China’s total export, Germany’s imports of natural flake graphite from China rose 22.31% to 8918.72 tons, valued at US$9.66 million, accounting for 10.6% of China’s total export.

The decreased of China’s imports of natural flake graphite is even more impressive amid a weakness in its domestic economy. The country only imported a total of 189.34 tons of natural flake graphite in the first eight months, down 91.09% year on year, with the amount at US$0.56 million. The imports price on average was at US$2999.1 per ton, up 405.3% year on year, the Custom data showed.

A slowing economy, plus Chinese governments are further regulating its graphite sector due to the problems of serious waste and environmental pollution, these factors have led to a significantly reduction of graphite output in China."
