Don't hesitate to correct me if I am mistaken, but I think Equityma is referring to the possibility of a trade war between US and China if Trump goes ahead with his threatened 45% tariff on Chinese imports.
The Chinese won't take this lying down, if higher tariffs are imposed on Chinese goods going into the US they will also slap a tariff on US goods entering China.
This situation would be positive for almond growers outside the US, as the US grows around 80% of the worlds almonds, two thirds of which are shipped overseas. Basically, any almond growers outside of the US would gain a major competitive advantage against the US almond exporters as US almonds would become much more expensive.
It remains to be seen if Trump will go ahead with this tariff, and there seems to be a view by the experts that this policy will be watered down given that it would likely result in significant damage to the US economy.
However, another one of Trump's policies- his crackdown on illegal immigrants- could also have a negative impact on the California almond industry, as around 50% of California's farm workers are undocumented.
Keep in mind that California's minimum wage is set to gradually increase from $10 to $15 five years from now, so it is not hard to imagine in the near future Californian farmers may have trouble finding workers to harvest their crops.
