In many cases short sellers expose frauds or I should say target frauds. Also, they target companies where management promises the sky while reality is the company will not meet forecast and ends up reporting much lower revenue than they promised.

I see nothing wrong with that kind of shorting.

Even when investors think POG will go down and they short gold miners I see no reason to complain. If they turn out to be wrong then I had great buying opportunity. If they turn out to be right and I got it wrong then it’s how the cookie crumble.

If shorts go overboard and short the company too much then they are exposed to short squeeze and they can’t complain if someone go after them destroys them because there are simply no shares to buy to cover the positions. Not at levels to keep them solvent anyway.
