I understand the theory behind short selling, the problem is that in theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice they are not. Short sellers don't need to be right. Leaving aside collusion between big payers and the sophisticated HFT algorithms that are deployed by short sellers, when it comes to smaller market cap stocks, big money can simply sell the share price down until stop losses are hit and/or people panic sell, at which point they can cover. As I say, I have no problems with short selling, per se, but in its current form it leaves the door wide open for market manipulation.
