As with the rest of the English language, laziness and ignorance have change the meaning of the words.
When I was younger, one "expects" say an attack and stands to. Or, say, "I wouldn't expect anything better from you"
One "anticipates" something pleasant such as the arrival of one's girlfriend. As in "looks forward to." In another meaning, one might "anticipate" a footballer passing the ball and intercept that pass by being in the right place at the right time. In that case it is close to "expect" but has shades of difference.
Of course, back then, "marriage" meant a union between a man and a woman. No idea what it means these days
