The short selling is corrupt. Everyone may remember when ABC learning was forced into liquidation because the shortsellers knew about Eddie Groves and his margin loan on his shares. They deliberately drove the price down which triggered margin calls and the whole thing spiralled into oblivion.
In my opinion it would be a much fairer market if
1 the short sell trades were flagged and the market knew when the trades were being executed (sell and. buy) because I believe shorting is a market manipulation of sorts and
2 any significant 'share borrowing' by an individual or an institution (eg more than 0.5%) had to be declared to the market. Along with any substantial changes in holdings. Then we would know where we stand.
it would be similar to what happens to long shareholders ie they have to declare a significant holding of 5% or more.
