Google was not clear when I asked it but seemed to indicate that HIE impacts children and not really adults (can happen) so perhaps they out grow that diagnosis

    HIE can have life-long impacts.

Approximately 40% of children diagnosed with HIE will go on to be diagnosed with cerebral palsy; HIE-acquired cerebral palsy accounts for roughly 10-15% of all cerebral palsy causes. (1)

A Swedish study reported that among survivors of hypothermia-treated HIE who were free of moderate/severe cerebral palsy, a third had MABC-2 scores indicating risk of motor difficulties at 11.1 years of age. (2)

HIE-acquired epilepsy can emerge around ages 4, 6, 8 and during puberty… during significant periods of growth, hormonal changes, etc. (3)

An Irish study reported that both mild and moderate HIE cohorts had significantly lower scores on tests of attention/executive functioning, verbal reasoning and sensory-motor ability compared to healthy peers, with moderate to large effect sizes. (4)

A systematic review published by UK researchers last year explored the socioemotional and psychological outcomes of HIE. Some of the HIE-associated outcomes found were:
    • decreased health-related quality of life
    • increased bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety
    • higher likelihood of behaviour problems (tractability, aggressivity, passivity, anxiety)
    • higher likelihood of ADHD-related diagnosis, or referral to psychological services
    • higher incidence of ASD
    • behaviour problems in mild or moderate HIE (peer problems, less prosocial)
    • excluding children with cerebral palsy, moderate or severe HIE was associated with lower personal-social skills and development, behaviour problems, anxious or depressed and aggressive behaviour, behaviour regulation problems, ADHD-related inattention, depression symptoms, and a higher incidence of psychopathology
    • excluding children with cerebral palsy, a moderate HIE group showed more behaviour problems (externalizing, withdrawn or depressed, aggressive) and elevated levels of anxiety disorder, ADHD, oppositional defiance, and sleep problems compared with a mild HIE group (5)
