Good incentive to drive the price down....
Drive it to an artificially low level, then sell a big chunk to an associated off-shore entity, thereby minimising any capital gains tax on the sale in Australia (while being able to demonstrate to the ATO the sale was at market price).
If the shares are then held in a jurisdiction with no capital gains tax (eg New Zealand), when the shares skyrocket on good news, they can be sold at a huge, tax-free profit.
I have no idea if this is what we've just witnessed, but it's one theory to explain the downward manipulation of prices.
