my understanding is the shorting activity relates more to intraday (or at most T+2) trades and would be aimed to benefit from share price being pushed down during that period, which it was heavily red on those particular days in contrast to majority green days.
I agree with your sentiments re moving forward with first assays soon to be announced, and parallels with AZS etc.
