I vaguely recall a novel set in South Africa were two big players were always battling it out.
One of them had big problems and would soon default so they did not let that make them a victim but instead sold out and then leaked news to cause and absolute market blood bath. They bought everything back at the bottom and announced that and the market rocketed back up again. In the meantime, their ponent, one step behind, got into real trouble as a result when they tried to press their perceived advantage.
Clavell maybe? Came out way back in the 1970's I think.
