I'm wondering what the best method is for tracking shares over several years to determine capital gain/loss.

It seems to be complex when considering there is a discount on shares held for more than 12 months, however when you buy and sell shares, how do you know which have been held or not?

For example I buy 1000 shares in 2020, but sell 500 in 2021 and buy 1000 more, then sell all shares in 2022 for a net gain. The first 500 I get 50% discount on the gain, the others I don't. It's a simple example, but when you start adding in many trades and many shares, over several years, it can get a bit complex to track what tax to pay, what you've already paid tax on, etc.

Rooky question: how do you keep track?

please don't tell me to go to an accountant.
