start with just shares, forget options for now

for a beginner you may want to look at midcap shares with good solid earnings

free software from http://www.hubb.com/ can help you out there

the book "Valuable" by Roger Montgomery is a good start

and Amazon has a few good books on technical analysis, charting and trading just look in the reviews and be sure to buy them in bundles as you save a bit of money on doing that

sometimes some book reviews are being positively reviewed by the author, so be careful - i remember seeing one book on swing trading where the positive reviews sounded bogus and the negative ones were scathing and sounded far more plausible
